When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), someone will pick you up. They’ll drive you to Moshi or Arusha. This is where you’ll spend the night before the trek. You can relax and get ready for your adventure.
Start your adventure early with a pickup from your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. The drive to Lake Natron takes you through stunning landscapes and offers chances to see local wildlife such as ostriches, zebras, and giraffes. Once you arrive at your lodge, settle in and enjoy a delicious lunch. Later in the afternoon, join a guided walk to Engare Sero Waterfalls, a peaceful spot where you can enjoy the natural beauty and take a swim in a cool pool surrounded by rocks. Afterward, head back to your lodge for dinner and rest before the big day ahead.

Your day begins around 11:00 PM with a light snack before you start your climb. The hike to the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai begins at midnight so you can reach the top in time for sunrise. The climb is challenging, taking you through rocky and thorny terrain, but the views are worth it. From the summit, you’ll get a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, Mount Kilimanjaro, and even the Ngorongoro Highlands. After enjoying the views, begin your descent, which takes about 3-4 hours. Once back at your lodge, enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading out for a short walk around Lake Natron’s southern shores to see flamingos. After that, begin your journey back to Moshi/Arusha, where you’ll arrive in the evening.
